HOW IT WORKS

The TURKEY TEST TUBE is designed to offer a similar resistance to shot pellets that they would encounter when impacting a mature wild turkey’s head and though not a patterning tool, the TURKEY TEST TUBE will accurately represent the pattern of shot a particular gun / load combination will deliver on a target roughly the size of the kill zone of a turkey.  If your shotgun shoots to point of aim you will easily be able to see if you are getting enough target coverage by simply looking at the front of the TURKEY TEST TUBE before you flip it over to calculate penetration percentage.

All of the shot from one shot shell will not penetrate to the same depth in a turkey or a ballistic test medium.  Different size shot (pellets) impacting at different velocities will also penetrate to different depths.  If the depth every pellet penetrated was measured you would see a range of penetration with about 50% of the shot in the middle and 25% on the shallow end and 25% on the deep end.  For example:  Out of the 200 pellets in a three inch, 12 gauge number 5 shot shell 50 pellets may penetrate between 1 and 1 ½ inches, 100 pellets to a depth between 1 ½ and 2 inches and 50 pellets at two inches or deeper.

It seems almost everything influences shot shell penetration such as barrel length, choke, portion of pattern and ammunition type.  The TURKEY TEST TUBE allows hunters to determine which load will give them the type of terminal ballistics they think best for their shotgun and the way they hunt.
